Dear Members of the Business Council in Shanghai,

So far 2018 has been a very positive year in Sino-Finnish relations, both from economic and political points of view. Today, China is Finland’s largest trading partner in Asia and the fourth largest globally. But economic relations between our countries today are more than just trade in goods. There is an entire set of economic interactions: trade in services, investments, research and development, tourism, and so forth. Today, China is also an important home market for many Finnish companies.

I expect that China’s attractiveness as a market for Finnish companies will only grow as it continues to report impressive growth rates compared to most other national economies. Structural changes in China’s economy create further additional business opportunities. At the same time, competition in the Chinese markets will of course remain intense.

One of our strengths in this challenging market is our Team Finland network. The Finnish Business Council in Shanghai is an integral part of our dedicated and active Team Finland China and I wish to thank all its members for their valuable contribution. Together we have been able to develop our cooperation, as well as services that we provide. This work will continue.

Shanghai will be the venue for the China International Import Expo in November. Officials and companies from more than 60 countries are expected to join the Expo. This will be one of the highlights of the year for us as well. Finland will have a strong participation and visibility in the event. I encourage companies to take full advantage of the range of opportunities during the Expo and its side events. During the coming months we prepare ourselves also for 2019 which will be the Sino-Finnish theme year on winter sports.

During the year we will have a good number of events related to this very Finnish theme. There should be something for everyone. So, follow the news!
