Dear Members of the Business Council in Shanghai,

Our bilateral partnership with China is broad and deep. An important step to further intensify the cooperation was taken this year in January, when President Xi and President Niinistö agreed to adopt a Joint Action Plan on Promoting the Future-oriented New-type Cooperative Partnership for the years 2019-2023. Our partnership touches upon a broad range of issues from sustainability and innovations in the economy to important political dialogues.

For decades, trade has constituted a key driver of the bilateral relationship. We intend to go further and be more ambitious in order to lay the groundwork for further trade, investment and tourism cooperation. Team Finland China plays a key role in these efforts. We will do our best to ensure that Finnish companies are given the best possible circumstances for making the most of the opportunities in the Chinese markets.

This year marks as the China-Finland Year of Winter Sports. Finnish winter sports industry and Finnish businesses have enjoyed a positive momentum in China resulting from frequent visits and successful exchanges between our two countries. The theme year is just the beginning of the cooperation towards the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics in 2022, and beyond.

Even if winter sports in many ways dominates the agenda this year, our work in other sectors continues at an increased pace. In fact, our strong visibility in the winter sports advances our goals in other sectors and creates synergies. Today our other priority areas are smart cities, education, food and travel.

However, the situation is not static. Continuous dialogue among all members of the Team Finland China is needed to ensure, that our priorities, and the ways we operate, are the right ones. The Finnish Business Council in Shanghai is one of the primary forces in our network and it guarantees that the voice of its members is heard in this respect.

In 2019, China will host important events, like World Winter Sports Expo in Beijing and the 2nd China International Import Expo in Shanghai. Finland, and Finnish companies, will have a strong participation and visibility in both. These will be highlight events for Team Finland work as well. So, let’s stay in touch and work together!
